How to Read Tires Sizes

Buying tires for your vehicle is a relatively simple process if you know what size you need. What many don’t understand is that there’s a lot of other valuable information on the tire’s sidewall. Stop at Lithia Volkswagen of Reno and we can show you how to read the information your tire is providing.

Although tires list the brand, model and size; the DOT and safety standard marking; Uniform Tire Quality Grading code; and speed, load and maximum tire pressure specifications. Here is what we read most using P215/65 R15 as an example.

  • P – Tire class (Passenger)
  • 215 – Tire width in ml from one sidewall to the other
  • 65 - Height of the sidewall; a percentage of the tire width (215 X .65 = 139.75)
  • R – Radial construction
  • 15 – Wheel diameter in inches of the wheel this tire fits
